Boca Chica Beach
Boca Chica is a very popular beach located in the Bay of San Andres, near Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic. It is located about 30 kilometres east of Santo Domingo, on the south coast of Hispaniola island.
Boca Chica began its tourism development in the years 1950, when dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo ordered the construction of a modern hotel, which is called "Hotel Hamaca"(Hammock) which became an icon of the region. In this hotel stayed Fulgencio Batista(the cuban dictator) whom was granted asylum in the Dominican Republic after the Cuban revolution took power.
The hotel "Hammock" (today Hotel Coral Hamaca) was closed almost immediately after the death of the tyrant Trujillo in May 1965 and remained closed for more than two decades until it was reopened at the beginning of the 1990s.
During the years 1950 and 1960 prominent families of the Dominican Republic built several beach houses along the coast and in the town of Boca Chica. Then at the end of 1960 and beginning of 1970 the beach was very popular and visited by, both by national and international tourists. Most important was the attention of people towards the visitors.
The proximity to the city of Santo Domingo, its crystalline waters and white sands of Boca Chica have made the most frecuented beach in the Dominican Republic. Boca Chica has two small islets: Los Pinos, which was made from sand dredged from the port of Andres in the years 1950 and The Matica which is a key of mangroves and habitat to several species of birds.
The beach at Boca Chica has a natural breakwater, as well as a source of fresh water from the underground river Brujuelas.
