Faro a Colón
Santo Domingo .- The Faro a Colon is one of the most important monuments in the Dominican Republic, the idea of creating a monument in honor of the discoverer of the americas "Christopher Columbus" is owed to the dominican writer Antonio del Monte and Tejada (according to his book "History of Santo Domingo").

In the year 1914 William Ellis, a north american took it upon himself to promote in the american press the building of a monument on the shores of Santo Domingo, in 1923 the idea of creating the lighthouse was consolidated in the V International Conference of American States, where it was ordered the collaboration of all the peoples of the americas for the construction of the monument.


In 1927 a commission was appointed to determine how the project would be, it would be developed in two phases, starting in 1929 where an international jury was commissioned to evaluate all projects (455) from different countries (48) remain after the evaluation and 10 mentions of honour were allocated. In the second phase, in 1931,the winner was announced, a draft submitted by an American architect named "Joseph Gleave Read", in the impressive presentation more than 2300 sketches were evaluated in Madrid and later in Rome.

In 1992, October 6, the Dominican Republic looked to the skys to see the reflections of the lights coming from the light house,bringing to an end the celebrations of the V Centennial of the Discovery of the Americas. On the same day the remains of whom 500 years ago had discovered the new world, were moved from the Cathedral Primada de Americas, where they had laid since 1544, to the Columbus Lighthouse, where thay rest in the Mausoleum of the Faro a Colon.

On October 11 the Faro a Colon was consecrated with the Mass offered by His Holiness Pope John Paul II, who gave a mass at the esplanade, a Colon Lighthouse was opened to the public on October 16 of that year, since then,the Dominican Republic enjoys the pleasure of having a monument that lights the havens at sunset signaling the discovery.
