El Malecón
The Malecon, as is popularly called runs from the port along the sea throughout the city of Santo Domingo. While every body calls it el Malecon the avenue's real named is George Washington. From anywhere on the Malecon you can see the great obelisk of Santo Domingo, popularly called "El Macho ".... as they say here ..... you know...

Lining El Malecon are many of the large luxury hotels in Santo Domingo such as Santo Domingo hotel, the Melia Hotel Santo Domingo, the Jaragua Hotel and Hilton among others, all of 5 stars. The hotel Jaragua is one of the best-known for its famous casino and lounges. We are not gamblers but we visited the casino to see the big activity "human" and "monetary" that takes place in the casino. For just the fact of gambling drinks are free ...

In addition to the party room in hotel Jaragua there are other places to have a drink and dance on the Malecon.

Besides walking down the Malecon many horse drawn carriages and calesas are avalable to tour this avenue and take in the view of the city, enjoyng the breeze of the Caribbean Sea.

In several sections of El Malecon you can find open-air exhibition of paintings by Haitian naif art. This art has infiltrated the Dominican Republic and can be purchased at very good prices,if you now how to deal, this brightly colored precious works of art are not tipical dominican, they are from our neighbors the hatians. They sit in the open air day and night with out lossing its splendor.
Also at the Malecon some festivities and popular events are held throughout the year. The most prominent is the Merengue Festival, which takes place over 2 weeks in July. Super fun with great pace and concentrates thousands of dominicans of all provinces and increasingly many foreign visitors.
