Conde Street Pedestrian "Calle el Conde Peatonal"
Santo Domingo .- In the Colonial City or Colonial Zone, one can find many buildings dating from the sixteenth century. The area is frecuented by tourists who have the desire to know and photograph the first city of the new world. Many of the buildings in this area remain in perfect condition thanks to the care and monitoring provided by the Dominican government.

In the core of the Colonial Zone is the most famous street and the one with the most history in Santo Domingo, this street is called Calle El Conde Peatonal (El Conde Pedestrian Street) as the name sugests this is a pedestrian mall where no vehicles are allowed.

This street had its begining in the first quater of the sixteenth century,as years passed the street kept growing westward until it reached the old city gate which has the same name "Puerta del Conde "




According to the Dominican history books the name of this street does honor to the Conde de Peñalba (Count of Peñalba) who had faced the English invasion of 1655.

Currently at Calle El Conde has a wide variety of shops. It consists of apartments in which the first floor are shops and the other floors are family dewlings, is one of the few areas of the world where one can "rent clothes" to gain access to historical monuments nearby that have specific requirements for entry.

The shops offer great variety of goods, but as this street is very much visited by tourists from other countries, there are many items that represent the dominican culture and customs .

To reach Calle el Conde you can use as reference, Independence Park at Km. 0 of Av. Independence, just in the Puerta del Conde, Santo Domingo, Zona Colonial.
