Fortaleza Ozama
Santo Domingo .- The Fortaleza Ozama is another historical monument that comprise the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo. Its name is derived from the Ozama river that runs next to it.La Fortaleza Ozama is the oldest built in the americas.
It was built in 1502 by Fray Nicolas de Ovando, who was the governor of the island. This fortress was built with the pourpose of protecting the city from attacks by pirates and conquerors.
The construction is done in the form of stone castle and retains its original medieval appearance. In the interior there are tunnels and dungeons where prisoners were housed, Christopher Columbus remains one of the most important prisoners recluded within the walls of this fortress.
The fortress consists of a building known as Tower of Homage, which is the main building, The Mayor's House which was inhabited by the mayor and a smaller building known as the Polvorín.
At present the fortress continues to function as a miliatry base. Other uses that has been given to this spacious place is conducting concerts and artistic activities such as Shakira's concert "Amphibian Tour" in 2000.
This place is a major historical destination that is part of the tour in the Colonial Zone. The fortress has also a bronze statue in memory of Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo.
